A joint initiative
to raise academic achievement in Mathematics amongst
African-American male students
2012 ASMA GOALS:
• Provide up to 32 hours of weekend tutorial services to selected participants in preparation for required community college assessment tests at respective sites.
• Scholars who score high enough on the community college assessment tests have an opportunity to complete a minimum of 84 hours of community college instruction within Intermediate Algebra or more challenging mathematics classes.
• Successful ASMA scholars will receive up to 5 units of college credit for successful completion of 6 week summer courses. These classes can be used to meet high school college preparatory requirements for college.
• Scholars will also receive a wide variety of cultural and college preparation activities and tours each Friday during the summer program.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
1. Prepare and assist scholars for intensive 6 week instruction into college mathematics Tutorial services and other support will be made available on as needed basis. Legacy activities will be used to complement college mathematics curriculum.
2. Introduce students to UC A-G requirements for college admissions preparation.
3. Setup visible academic reward system, based on summer school and Legacy activities to determine which Legacy Scholars earn “right” to participate in residential week.
4. Provide speakers and other culturally relevant instruction to maximize learning opportunities.
PROGRAM SUMMARY:
Legacy Roundtable will host in concert with the University of California Riverside, University of California Irvine, Chaffey College, Mt. San Antonio College, and Mt. San Jacinto College (Moreno Valley College—pending), a six week program for up to 50 participants at each community college campus. To participate, students and families pay only a minimal non-refundable deposit
There will be two phases of ASMA 2012:
1. A six week “commuter-based” set of community college mathematics classes with academic and cultural field trips each Friday. College and cultural activities are MANDATORY.
2. A one week college residential experience at UC Irvine or UC Riverside for scholars who earn “A” or “B” grades/scores in the summer community college classes.
Legacy Roundtable representatives and volunteers will staff the six weeks with speakers and teaching assistants to introduce students to online resources and methods to reach career aspirations. All Legacy sponsored-services will include daily sessions that focus on self-development, self-discipline, and academic skills building (especially reading) to supplement daily math instruction in summer courses, Monday through Thursday.
Fridays will be used to expose students to colleges, scientific business environments and one community-based cultural center or activity; these activities may extend to more than three hours.
The five day residential program will operate from July 29 to August 3, 2012. There will be five overnight days and one half day commemorating completion of the entire six week session. The final day will end with parents and family present during our recognition ceremony—planned and hosted by program scholars and staff.
